Engine 1218

The heart of the museum and the last big steam engine to run through the Junction.

1218 hauled passenger trains across the Northern line for fourteen years, timed so precisely that farmers set their clocks by her whistle.

Retired in 1958, she sat in a scrapyard outside Millbrook until a group of former crew members bought her for one dollar and a promise to keep her running.

Today she steams up on summer weekends. Visitors can stand in the cab while the fireman works, and ask as many questions as they like.

See it move: Engine 1218 runs on weekends from May to October. Check the events calendar for steam-up days.
